With
Greece often in the news headlines at the moment, it is good to
keep remembering our mission partners, Jonathan, Dawn, Joel, Hannah,
Esther and Ruth Clark, who work in Athens...
The
Clarks have been living in Athens since January 2007, where they work
with the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES).
Their aim, in partnership with Bible-believing churches in Greece, is
to build a student movement that helps Christians to become mature
disciples of Jesus and that proclaims him to the many students around
them who don’t know the gospel. They are focusing on the students
in Athens but are developing links with groups and individuals in
other parts of the country.
Many think that political and economic uncertainty are Greece’s
biggest problems but in the light of eternity, these things pale. Take a moment to reflect on the size of the Christian
community in Greece….
Greece
has a population of around 11 million, about 400,000 of whom are
students. While it’s impossible to be definite, probably fewer than
100 of these are believers.
Greek believers generally lack confidence in
sharing the gospel with those around them. The Clarks’ main task
therefore is to build conviction, courage and confidence among
believing students, and stand with them in their evangelism to the thousands who know next to nothing about Jesus.
The
main challenges they face are the language (it’s not an easy one to
learn), the introspective nature of the evangelical church, the
spiritual blindness of the students and the slow progress of the
work, all of which require patience, perseverance and trust that God will do His
work in His time.
Let's commit together to praying regularly for for the Clarks.
