Next Sunday is the international day of prayer for the persecuted church...

'Islamic extremists are intent on eradicating the church in the Middle East, but many courageous Christians are determined to stay and serve their communities. They're crying out to us - their global church family - for support.
"We need prayer, every day," says a church leader, speaking on behalf of displaced families in Iraq. "When we see pictures of IS (Islamic State) on the television, we're afraid. When we hear that IS has been driven back, we regain hope. Every day our feelings change. So please pray for us every day."'

This week, in the run up to the international day of prayer for the persecuted church, there will be a blog post every day about a different country around the world to help us stand alongside our persecuted brothers and sisters in prayer.  Pray with others too - come and join the mission prayer meeting, Tuesday 15th, 8-9.30pm at 12 Mulberry Walk, Coombe Dingle, BS9 2PL*

As our compassion grows for those facing persecution, it is tempting to feel pity.  Yet let's keep Jesus' words ringing in our ears - so often it is those in fear for their lives who know the most joy, and those with the least in life who pity us as the church in the West.  Let's pray they'd know the truth of these words, and be filled with certainty and strength to keep going for one more day.

20 Looking at his disciples, he said:
‘Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
    for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now,
    for you will laugh.
22 Blessed are you when people hate you,
when they exclude you and insult you
and reject your name as evil,
because of the Son of Man.
23 ‘Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.
24 ‘But woe to you who are rich,
for you have already received your comfort.
25 Woe to you who are well fed now,
    for you will go hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep.
26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.
