Pray for the persecuted church: Eritrea

Eritrea: "the North Korea of Africa"
Population: 5.4 million
Main Religion: Islam 50% Christianity 50%
Government: One-party state

Eritrea is under the control of a dictator and the so-called 'People's Front for Democracy and Justice' exerts absolute control over its citizens, including their religious life.

All religious groups must be registered. Although members of the Eritrean Coptic Church enjoy relative freedom, other denominations are seen as 'agents of the West'. The government's tough stance on religion can affect Muslims as well as Christians, though radical Muslims appear to be gaining support.

Thousands of believers have been imprisoned in horrific conditions - some are kept in metal shipping containers in scorching temperatures, others undergo forced manual labour.

Please pray for:
  • the President, Isaias Afwerki
  • Eritrean Christians to be sustained and protected
  • ultimately, an end to persecution.

A Prayer to pray:
God of all comfort, for those who are tortured both in body and mind, give them the grace to endure and to see their suffering as part of following in Christ’s footsteps.
Merciful God, for those asked to pay the ultimate price; who are martyred because of their love for you, may they truly know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death.

Mary's Christmas

It was a messy start,
not what I imagined.
We had plans:
a wedding shortly;
a family of our own;
Joseph’s workshop.

That was until God stepped in.

Light-blinding
Mind-bending
Plan-altering
Announcement

I am to host
the Lord of Hosts!

How my soul rejoiced!

But me? Me?
I’ve only just started
out on life.

When my stomach started to swell
so did men’s tempers.

Men and women alike
failed to believe –
we had a history of dreams and visions,
but my story was heralded as a lie.

Who am I anyway?
A young, unmarried Judean girl?

No status, no followers.

And yet –
created by God,
equal in status to those who are followed,
and in me growing
the light and hope of this world.

A fragile creation
divinely conceived
and momentarily concealed
to be revealed to his fragile creation.

My son,
the Son,
will shine brighter than the sun.

I know already
that the darkness will not understand.

The light will shine
but the darkness will further close its eyes.

And yet –
the light must shine for those who will open their eyes.

Even my dear Joseph struggled to believe –
he started making plans to reverse his pledge.

That was until God stepped in.

Light-blinding
Mind-bending
Plan-altering
Announcement

Apologies abounded
Forgiveness a balm
Joy shared

A child!
Our child.
The Child.

A Fruitful Life

A mediation on Galatians 5:16-24
by L.-R. M. (Emmanuel Westbury)

A fruitful life

Love Agape                            When you seek the best for others
I see Christ in your eyes

Joy Chara                               When you rejoice at what makes His heart race
I see Christ in your smile

Peace Eirene                          When you rest in His ways
I see Christ in your mind

Patience Makrothumia          When you live not counting the time
I see Christ in your goals

Kindness Chrestotes               When you extend yourself to others
I see Christ in your hands

Goodness Agathosune            When you radiate virtue
I see Christ in your outlook

Faithfulness Pistis                  When you’re in it for the long-haul
I see Christ in your plans

Gentleness Prautes                 When you rule and balance who you are
I see Christ in your spirit

Self-control Egkrateia            When you master thought, tongue and temple
I see Christ in your desires

When you see the fruit and yearn for more,
Christ is at your core.
