Mary's Christmas

It was a messy start,
not what I imagined.
We had plans:
a wedding shortly;
a family of our own;
Joseph’s workshop.

That was until God stepped in.

I am to host
the Lord of Hosts!

How my soul rejoiced!

But me? Me?
I’ve only just started
out on life.

When my stomach started to swell
so did men’s tempers.

Men and women alike
failed to believe –
we had a history of dreams and visions,
but my story was heralded as a lie.

Who am I anyway?
A young, unmarried Judean girl?

No status, no followers.

And yet –
created by God,
equal in status to those who are followed,
and in me growing
the light and hope of this world.

A fragile creation
divinely conceived
and momentarily concealed
to be revealed to his fragile creation.

My son,
the Son,
will shine brighter than the sun.

I know already
that the darkness will not understand.

The light will shine
but the darkness will further close its eyes.

And yet –
the light must shine for those who will open their eyes.

Even my dear Joseph struggled to believe –
he started making plans to reverse his pledge.

That was until God stepped in.

Apologies abounded
Forgiveness a balm
Joy shared

A child!
Our child.
The Child.
